About the York Book Award

The York Book Award was created in 2021 by school librarians who wanted to unite the young people of York by enabling them to celebrate and share the books that matter to them.

Following eighteen months of restricted life during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a need to create something positive to broaden horizons and opportunities for young people across the city which would foster both a passion for reading and a sense of community.

The pandemic brought a resurgence of reading to many, yet it also further highlighted and exacerbated the many challenges faced by young people and their families in York. Whilst sadly we cannot address all of these issues, as school librarians we know that books have the power to change lives and that reading is a positive force for academic success and personal wellbeing.
